Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Gas Distribution Grid.

Seán Ryan

Question:

36 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Energy if he has any immediate plans to extend the natural gas grid to all householders in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bord Gáis Éireann (BGE) has a statutory obligation to develop and maintain a system for the supply of natural gas on a commercial basis. Accordingly, proposals for the extension of the gas distribution grid are a matter for Bord Gáis Éireann and are assessed by the board in the light of that obligation.

The board is currently engaged in an extensive programme to extend the gas supply to estates not currently connected to the grid in Dublin and other areas throughout the country. Because of the numbers of estates involved, their connection will take place on a planned basis over the period 1992-1996. Extension to individual estates and areas will, naturally, depend on the level of uptake in each case. Only estates which are identified as viable will be connected.
