Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cork Radon Levels Survey.

Thomas Foxe

Question:

42 Mr. Foxe asked the Minister for Energy if the survey concerning radon levels in Cork city has been completed; if the results of the survey will be published; and, if he will outline the steps that will be taken to remedy the situation.

A preliminary investigation of indoor radon levels in the southern half of Cork city has been completed by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. Individual results were issued to the householders concerned.

A Press Release containing the results of the Survey was issued by the Institute's predecessor the Nuclear Energy Board on 19 March 1992, copies of which are available from the Institute, if the Deputy so requires.

Remedial action is primarily the responsibility of the householder or the owners of property.

The Department of the Environment is in a position to provide technical guidance on remediation measures to them, to builders and to the engineering and architectural professions. For that purpose that Department has prepared a booklet "Radon in Buildings" and it recently co-operated with engineering and architectural organisations in arranging a seminar in Cork on the radon gas problem.
