Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Proposed Carbon/Energy Tax.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

70 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Finance if it is envisaged that when the proposed new energy, carbon and resource taxes are introduced, they will be additional to the existing tax burden; and the plans, if any, there are to reduce labour taxes, particularly at lower paid levels, so that the total tax burden does not increase.

The EC Commission's proposal for a carbon/energy tax has yet to be discussed by the Council of Economic and Finance Ministers. In such circumstances, it would be premature to speculate on the downstream implications and repercussions of the introduction of any such tax.
