Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Destruction of Hedgerows.

John Bruton

Question:

83 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if any estimate has been made of the damage to natural habitats of rare species of animals and insects by the localised destruction of hedgerows.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service, Office of Public Works does not have detailed information on the destruction of hedgerows in this country and cannot therefore estimate the effect such removal specifically may have on rare species of animals and insects. However, observations indicate that hedgerow removal is a less serious problem in Ireland than in many other countries particularly Great Britain. Many farmers recognise the importance of hedges as windbreaks which is an important consideration in Irish weather conditions.
