Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tree Planting.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

112 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline his proposals, if any, to encourage more tree planting with the intention of improving the environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my overall policy that forestry development, through grant schemes operated by my Department, will make a positive contribution to the environment. It is a specific condition of grant-aid that projects are compatible with the protection of the environment. Furthermore, the planting of broadleaves is encouraged by providing the highest grants of £2,000 a hectare for these species only. In addition, the recently introduced Planned Recreational Forestry Scheme encourages the development of mainly broadleaf forests with public recreational facilities. This scheme particularly encourages participation by local authorities and the involvement of local communities.
