Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drugs Problem.

Ivor Callely

Question:

134 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the situation in Dublin as compared with the rest of the country in relation to (a) drug abuse (b) drug trafficking and (c) drug pushing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information available relates to the number of persons charged with offences under the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977-1984 and the number of seizures in the Dublin Metropolitan Area and the country as a whole. The figures for 1990 are set out in the tabular statement below. As can be seen from these figures drug charges and seizures in the Dublin Metropolitan Area for 1990 represent approximately three quarters of the total corresponding figures for the whole country. Figures for 1991 are not yet available.
