Question:145 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the procedures involved for individual sports persons in applying for assistance from the national lottery in order to improve and enhance their performances.

My Department operates a scheme of grants to outstanding sportspersons. It is open to individual sportspersons to apply for assistance under this scheme through their appropriate national governing body. Grants are awarded based on the recommendations of the national governing body of the sport followed by an assessment of each application by a selection committee which makes recommendations on the individuals to be grant aided and the amount of grant to be awarded.
