Question:

185 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the amount of money which he has allocated to in-service courses for 1992; the way in which it is intended to be spent; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total provision for in-service training of teachers at primary and post-primary levels in 1992 is £1,214,000.

The in-service training programme is aimed at developing teachers' knowledge of course content, enhancing their skills in teaching methodologies and in keeping them abreast of developments in education.
The major thrust of in-service training at second-level will be the further development of the training programme for the Junior Certificate. In addition, at both primary and post primary levels, specialist training in specific aspects of the curriculum will be carried out through a series of summer courses in these areas. These courses will include training in gender equity issues, new technologies and home-school links in addition to training in the teaching of specific subjects.
Under theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress, a sum of £265,000 is being provided for the specific purposes of the development of teachers' skills in the area of pupil assessment, in dealing with disadvantaged pupils and in the area of organisation and management of schools.
