Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Construction.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

242 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for the Environment if a financial allocation will be made this year to Leitrim County Council for construction on the N4 which would include the by-passing of Drumsna, Jamestown and Carrick-on-Shannon; and when he expects the work on this section of the N4 to be completed.

In the current year, grants totalling £655,000 have been provided to Leitrim County Council for improvement works on the N4, including a grant of £465,000 to meet preliminary expenditure arising on the proposed Jamestown-Drumsna by-pass project. This project involves the construction of 7.2 km of new single carriageway road by-passing Drumsna and Jamestown and the narrow Shannon bridges on the existing route.

On 13 March last, I confirmed a Compulsory Purchase Order in respect of property necessary for the project and I understand that contract documents are now being prepared for the works. Construction is scheduled to commence in 1993 and to be completed in 1995.
