Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Return of Artefacts.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

16 Mr. Deenihan asked the Taoiseach if the remaining artefacts, now stored in the National Museum, which were discovered in County Kerry, could be re- turned either on long term loan or a permanent basis to the new County Museum in Tralee, County Kerry.

The National Museum of Ireland is co-operating closely with the new County Museum in Tralee by providing a large number of objects of Kerry provenance for display. These include important artefacts from the Irish Antiquities Division such as the crucifixion figure which was found on Skellig Mhicíl and valuable historical material relating to Daniel O'Connell from the Art and Industry Division.

I can assure the Deputy that both the Director of the National Museum and I are committed to the development of local and county museums. Any future requests for the loan of National Museum material for exhibitions at local and county museums will continue to be examined sympathetically.
