Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cycle Ramps.

John Bruton

Question:

52 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment if he will issue a circular to local authorities urging them to include cycle-ramps in all relevant road developments in anticipation of the enactment of section 65 of the Roads Bill which deals with this matter.

Section 65 of the Roads Bill, 1991 will enable local authorities to construct or provide cycle ways reserved for the exclusive use of cyclists or for pedestrians and cyclists. This power will be in addition to the existing provision in the Road Traffic Acts dealing with cycle tracks. In relation specifically to such facilities, I intend to make regulations shortly to introduce a series of traffic signs to be utilised where cycle tracks are provided, and an appropriate circular will issue to local authorities at that stage.

Local authorities are reminded on an annual basis, through the Memorandum on Road Grants, to address the needs of cyclists both through the adequate maintenance of the surface of hard shoulders and by considering the provision of facilities for cyclists either on existing roads or in the development of new roads.
