Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Financial Assistance to Dublin Company.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

86 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline (a) the financial supports, grants or other aids provided by his Department or the Government to a company (details supplied) in Dublin 17 over the past ten years, since the company set up in Dublin (b) the explanations which have been sought from the company for the laying off of over 90 per cent of its staff at the conclusion of its ten year period at Clonshaugh Industrial Estate and (c) the efforts which will be made to replace the job losses to the industrial estate as a result of this company's scaling down of operations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Grants of £1,446,988 were approved for the company of which £1,047,038 have been paid.

The company is a subsidiary of Westinghouse Canada. As a result of a decline in the aviation business in Canada and due to the recession, Westinghouse propose to consolidate their manufacturing business back into Canada.

The IDA, which has day-to-day responsibility for such matters, is in discussion with Westinghouse at present regarding the arrangements which should be made consequent on the reduction in employment in the plant. The IDA is in close contact with the company both here and in Canada with the objective of either restoring manufacturing to the previous level, or alternatively seeking another operation on the same scale.
