Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Archaeological Investigation.

Michael Bell

Question:

107 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline (a) the cost of the archaeological dig in relation to the Garda Barrack's site in Drogheda, County Louth, (b) the duration of it and (c) when it will be completed; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that it is holding up the building of a much needed new Garda station in Drogheda; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An extensive archaelogical investigation lasting 15 weeks was completed in January, 1990 on the site purchased for a new Garda station in Drogheda. The total cost of the excavation works, research, and post excavation work was £45,000.

The results of this survey necessitated a revision of the design of the station in order to preserve certain archaeological features. The cost of this revised scheme gave rise to concern, however, and a further review of the scheme was required. This is nearing completion following recent consultations with the Department of Justice and the Garda.
