Vol. 421 No. 5

Written Answers. - Use of Angel Dust.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

145 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the public statement by the IFA county chairman in Waterford (details supplied) in which he acknowledged that a number of farmers throughout the county are feeding the illegal substance angel dust to their cattle; if he intends to investigate the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the statements to which the Deputy refers. A comprehensive range of measures are in place to counter the abuse of illegal growth enhancers. Particular attention has been devoted to the testing for residues of these substances at factory and farm level and to the prevention of the availability and distribution of such substances. Where offences are detected prosecutions are initiated as a matter of course.
