Vol. 421 No. 6

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the following matter: the need for the Irish Government to urgently arrange the agreed preparatory meeting for Strand 3 of the Northern Ireland talks process between them and the British Government with observers from the Northern Ireland parties, in view of the fact that the agreed preparatory meeting for Strand 2 has already taken place, that there is a time limit of the end of next month on the entire talks process, and that the good faith and trust generated by the welcome holding of the preparatory meeting for Strand 2 is liable to be dissipated if there is any appearance of delay in arranging this further agreed meeting.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated under Standing Order 30 and, accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I fully accept your ruling, but in view of the importance of this matter, may I ask the Taoiseach if he will arrange to brief me and other Opposition leaders today on the situation evolving here in regard to these talks?

I have ruled on the matter and there are many other ways of dealing with it.
