Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Proposed Closure of Dublin Schools.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

34 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if he will ensure that either the Marist Secondary School, Clogher Road, or Coláiste Chaoimhín, Parnell Road, Dublin remains open as the closure of both would be a devastation to the parish; and if he will consider the other for use as an All-Irish secondary school.

Marist Secondary School, Clogher Road, and Colaiste Caoimhín, Parnell Road, Dublin are voluntary secondary schools. The schools' Trustees have decided to phase out and close the schools.

My Department is satisfied that sufficient post-primary places are available in schools in adjoining, accessible areas for children who would normally have expected to attend these schools.

Accordingly, any action on the part of my Department would not be warranted.

With regard to the use of one of the schools as an all-Irish Secondary School, the disposal of the school properties in question is a matter for the owners, the appropriate religious body, in the first instance. I should also add that my Department is not aware of a demand for the provision of an All-Irish post primary school in the Crumlin area.
