Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Third Level Education for Mentally Handicapped.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

39 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education his views on whether the principle that people with a mental handicap are entitled to be educated on reaching age 18 and should be an integral part of third level education which is funded by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Green Paper on Education which will be launched today includes a section on access to third level education for students with disabilities. It refers to the need for special additional arrangements for students with intellectual impairments so that they can have access to suitable programmes of further education and training.

A special committee which has been established to review all aspects of special education is being asked to make detailed proposals for the implementation of all the proposals in the Green Paper relating to young people with disabilities.
