Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Teacher Service for Traveller Children.

Michael Ferris

Question:

65 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education if he will outline (a) the extent of the visiting teacher service for traveller children throughout the country and (b) the individual areas served; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The visiting teacher service for traveller children had up to recently a total of six visiting teachers. These teachers were assigned as follows: Dublin, 3; Cork, 1; Galway, 1; Limerick, 1. As part of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, three additional visiting teachers have been added to the service. These teachers have been assigned to Counties Dublin, Kerry and Wexford.

In addition to these three teachers, a fourth teacher post also allocated under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, has been assigned to a newly created position of national education officer for traveller children, whose function is to promote, facilitate and co-ordinate the education of traveller children on a national basis.
