Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Education of Traveller Children.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

72 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the plans, if any, he has to introduce modules on travellers culture in pre-service and in-service education for all teachers in order to support teachers in providing an inter-cultural environment to assist in the full integration of traveller children; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the Green Paper on Education the future plans in relation to the education of traveller children are outlined. These plans include a proposal to discuss with the colleges of education the matter of providing a module on travellers and travellers' culture in the pre-service education of teachers.

In devising curricular guidelines for schools, regard is had to the special needs of particular groups such as travellers' children.

However, it has not been the practice to seek to highlight differences between traveller children and other children attending ordinary schools, rather, the emphasis is placed on stressing the very many respects in which all children are similar, in order to encourage the integration of groups such as traveller children into mainstream education.
