Vol. 422 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ballycotton (Cork) Inquiry Report.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

27 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the progress made to date in implementing the recommendations of the report of the tribunal of inquiry into the Ballycotton disaster; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the very comprehensive reply which my predecessor gave the House on 6 November 1991 concerning the implementation of the recommendations of the Ballycotton report. He outlined, at that time, the progress which had been made as regards the equipping, training, and the establishment of operational criteria to ensure the safe operation of sea patrols. Subsequently an additional £250,000 was allocated to the fisheries boards to cover safety expenditure costs.

Since coming to office I informed the House on 26 February 1992 of measures taken in relation to the safety of staff following the Ballycotton report.

The allocation for inland fisheries in 1992 is £7.590 million which includes a special provision for the purchase of additional semi rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) by the Regional Fisheries Boards. This type of boat was considered by the Ballycotton report to be suitable for the nature of the work involved. I understand that four new RIBs are on order by the fisheries boards and that their delivery is imminent.
