Question:

35 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine the total number of people employed in the fishing industry at sea and on land and the estimated total income of the industry to the economy.

The estimated total number of people employed in the fishing industry at sea and on land is 15,800. This is broken down as follows: fleet, 7,900; processing, 3,800; aquaculture, 2,600; ancillary, 1,500.

An indication of the contribution of the fishing industry to the economy is given by the value of fish exports, which in 1990 stood at £170 million.
