Vol. 422 No. 1

Written Answers. - Safety Code of Practice.

Ivan Yates

Question:

38 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give details of (1) the outcome of his discussions with ferry companies in relation to a code of practice for the safety of passengers and cargo and (2) the code as it is now proposed.

Recently I met senior officials from all of the pasasenger ferry companies which operate in this country. At that meeting I called on the ferry companies to produce a consumer code for customers which would outline the rights and obligations of passengers using the ferries. I am awaiting detailed proposals from the ferry companies on the exact form and substance of the code, which I am anxious to have in place at an early date.

I also intend to establish a specialist consumer forum to finalise the new consumer code and oversee its operation, as well as other consumer related matters.
