Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Counties Leitrim-Sligo Garda Stations.

Edward Nealon

Question:

136 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the names of the Garda barracks in County Leitrim that are regarded as being in a bad or substandard condition; and if he will give details of the plans, if any, he has to have appropriate action taken in each case.

Question:

137 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the names of the Garda barracks in County Sligo that are regarded as being in a bad or sub-standard condition; and if he will give details of the plans, if any, if he has to have appropriate action taken in each case.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 136 and 137 together.

It would be misleading to list all the stations in the Division of Sligo-Leitrim which are not up to standard. Problems relating to Garda stations can vary greatly and can be rectified in different ways. Frequently stations which would formerly have been adequate are replaced or extended because of changes in Garda accommodation requirements. Many of the buildings which house Garda stations are old; some require structural improvement, others new facilities such as central heating, new kitchen facilities, shower facilities, improvements to cells, and so on. Finally, a very large amount of the work which takes place is of a minor nature and is part of an ongoing process of maintenance and modernisation.

The Deputy will no doubt be pleased to note that I recently announced the setting up of a review of the Garda Building Programme to assess Garda accommodation needs, having regard to changing Garda requirements and to make recommendations as to how these should be met on the most cost-effective basis. This review will pinpoint the objectives we must set ourselves in relation to Garda accommodation in all areas of the country for the years ahead.

Question:

138 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the levels of crime for County Sligo, either on a county basis or else for the Garda District areas that cover County Sligo, for the years (1) 1980 (2) 1985 and (3) the latest year for which figures are available.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that crime statistics are compiled on a Garda district and sub-district, not a county basis. Figures for recorded indictable crime in Sligo relate to the Garda districts of Sligo and Ballymote and the sub-districts of Enniscrone and Easkey.

The total numbers of indictable crimes recorded for these districts and sub-districts for the years 1980, 1985 and 1990 are set out in the following tabular statement. Figures for 1991 are not yet available.
