Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Food Hygiene Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

161 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will increase the amount a person who breaches Food Hygiene Regulations 1950-1989, can be fined in order to ensure that such fines reflect the seriousness of the crime.

The maximum fine for infringements of the Food Hygiene Regulations was increased from £100 to £1,000, with £100 a day for a continuing offence with effect from 31 December 1991. I am satisfied that this tenfold increase reflects the seriousness of the offence and that a further increase would not be warranted at this time.
