Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Potato Production.

James Leonard

Question:

211 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the steps, if any, which are being taken to ensure that an adequate supply of a suitable variety of potatoes are being produced for the manufacture of frozen chips and crisps in view of the current imports.

The main variety used for the production of frozen chips and crisps is Record and adequate supplies of it are available. A new variety, Rooster, produced by Teagasc has recently become available. It has potential for use in crisps. Adequate supplies of seed from this variety will be available from 1992 harvest onwards.
