Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farm Retirement Pensioners.

Edward Nealon

Question:

216 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the fact that farmers who took retirement pension under previous Government schemes fared very badly and would in fact be receiving the same or perhaps more money through the ordinary social welfare system if they had not retired and given up their farm; and if, in view of the new retirement scheme being introduced under the Common Agricultural Policy agreement, he will make some special allowance for these farm retirement pensioners.

Farmers who availed of previous retirement schemes are not eligible for consideration under the new EC retirement scheme. However these farmers are entitled to apply to the Department of Social Welfare to have their eligibility for social welfare benefits assessed.
