Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Roscommon Unemployment.

John Connor

Question:

223 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will outline (1) the number of persons unemployed and (2) the number of persons at work in County Roscommon for each of the years from 1987 to 1991; and if he will further outline the cost to the Exchequer of maintaining the number of unemployed in County Roscommon in 1991.

Unemployment statistics are compiled by reference to the local office from where the claims are administered, and the catchment area of a Local Office is not necessarily confined to a particular county. The numbers of persons registered as unemployed at the three local offices situated in County Roscommon are as set out in the following table. However, the claims of some persons resident in County Roscommon would be administered from the Athlone Local Office, and those of others from the Carrick-on-Shannon Office, and it is not possible to distinguish these claims from those of persons resident in other counties.

Note: These statistics are compiled by the Central Statistics Office and are published in that organisation's “Live Register: Monthly Area Analysis”.
The Central Statistics Office do not compile data on the numbers of persons in employment at county level. Unemployment statistics are not maintained in a manner which would facilitate the provision of the cost data sought. However, the Deputy might find the following figures of assistance. These set out the estimated average annual expenditure on unemployment payments per 1,000 persons on the live register for the period 1987 to 1991.
