Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Unemployment.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

229 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Social Welfare the numbers of unemployed in the Finglas, Ballymun, Glasnevin areas of Dublin; if he will give comparative figures for each of the years since 1987; and if he will outline the cost of social welfare benefits to these people in each of those years.

Unemployment statistics are compiled by reference to the local office from where the claims are administered rather than the area of residence of the claimants. Only the Ballymun local office caters exclusively for persons resident in the areas specified by the Deputy. However, a considerable number of claims in respect of people resident in these areas are administered by Gardiner Street and North Cumberland Street local offices and it is not possible to distinguish between these claims and those of persons resident in other areas. The numbers of persons registered as unemploymed at Ballymun Employment Exchange are as set out as follows:

Note: These statistics are compiled by the Central Statistics Office and are published in that organisation's “Live Register: Monthly Area Analysis”.
Unemployment statistics are not maintained in a manner which would facilitate the provision of the cost data sought. However, the Deputy might find the following figures of assistance. These set out the estimated average annual expenditure on unemployment payments per 1,000 persons on the live register for the period 1987 to 1991.
