Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - ECOFIN Meetings.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

40 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the steps, if any, he proposes to take to deal with the EC information deficit to which the Taoiseach referred; and if he has any specific plans to make a regular statement following each ECOFIN meeting in view of the central importance of this meeting to the life of the Community and the perception of democracy by European citizens; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of improving the information about European developments available to the general public is under consideration in the European Co-ordination Committee, which is chaired by the Minister of State with responsibility for European Affairs, Deputy Kitt.

The Dáil and Seanad have, of course, the opportunity, if they wish to use it, to debate the comprehensive reports on developments in the European Community which are published regularly by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The proposed Joint Oireachtas Committee on European and Foreign Affairs will no doubt play a useful role in spreading information and knowledge on Community affairs.

I do not think that it is necessary to make a regular statement following each ECOFIN meeting. As Deputies are aware, I normally brief the media after the ECOFIN and the results of the meeting are given substantial media coverage. However, to facilitate Deputies, I can ensure that copies of the Council press release following the ECOFIN are placed in the Dáil Library.
