Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Giant Hogweed.

John Connor

Question:

41 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance whether the Office of Public Works has identified the harmful rapidly proliferating plant, the giant hogweed, as a problem in rivers, canals or navigations in the care of the commissioners; and if he will outline the steps that are underway to control or eradicate this noxious weed.

Some giant hogweed plants were discovered recently on the banks of the River Barrow navigation. These have been treated and the position will be monitored on an ongoing basis.

Reports that the plant is growing at one of two locations on the Shannon navigation are being investigated and if their existence within the commissioners' property is confirmed the necesary treatment will be undertaken.

There is no evidence that the giant hogweed is growing on the Grand Canal or the Royal Canal.
