Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Assistance for Fishing.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

70 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Finance whether additional funds promised in the Delors II package are available to assist with restructuring our fishing community.

The Delors II package is the Commission proposal for all aspects of the Community budget for the period 1993 to 1997. As part of that package the Commission has proposed substantial increases in total Structural Funding for the less developed regions of the Community, including Ireland. The Commission proposals are being considered by the Council.

In the context of the Delors II package, the Commission has proposed that an additional objective, Objective 6, dealing with fisheries be added to the objectives of the Structural Funds. Any funding for fisheries under this Objective would come from within the total amount of Structural Funding decided on; it would not be additional to it.

The Delors II package is still under consideration. Any additional funding for restructuring the fishing community or other purposes through the Structural Funds will not come on stream until 1994, since the existing allocation of Structural Funds covers the period to end-1993.
