Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Award System.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

89 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach if he will outline the success, if any, in the preparation of an honours or order of merit system in this country whereby suitable recognition can be given to those who by their achievements in various areas have brought honour and distinction to the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated to the House on 25 February last, in response to a previous question, I am favourably disposed, provided all-party agreement can be reached, towards the establishment of an honours system as a means of honouring persons who have achieved national or international distinction with consequent benefit to this country.

I also said on that occasion that I would be agreeable to have exploratory talks with the leaders of the other parties at some future date to ascertain whether any initiative in this area would have their support.

Due to pressure of other business, it has not been possible to make any further progress in this matter since then.
