Written Answers. - Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal.

Question:

116 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline (a) the amount of the work on the restoration of the Ballinamore/Ballyconnell Canal which has now been completed, (b) the total cost of the work to-date, (c) the estimated completion date for the entire project and (d) the estimated total cost of the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The restoration of the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal is being carried out by ESB International pursuant to powers delegated under the Shannon Navigation Act, 1990. Latest indications from the Board are that (a) the project commenced on site in spring 1991 and to date approximately 60 per cent of work has been completed, (b) the total cost of the work to date is £14.8 million, (c) the estimated completion date for the entire project is March 1994 and it is hoped to have the waterway open for the 1994 tourist season, (d) the estimated total cost of the project is £30 million.
