Question:

108 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the progress made regarding the provision of a 50 metres swimming pool.

A number of proposals have recently been received by my Department for the provision of a 50 metre swimming pool complex. These proposals will be considered in the context of the detailed examination of the question of providing such a complex in the country.

109 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education when the construction work will begin on the new swimming pool in Sligo.

110 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if he will outline (1) the total funds being allocated for the construction of the Sligo Swimming Pool (2) the amount of these funds coming from the national lottery (3) the source of any funds not coming from the national lottery and (4) the precise subheads under which these funds were voted for the present financial year or otherwise; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 109 and 110 together.

A full cost grant of £1.2 million is being provided by my Department from the proceeds of the national lottery for the construction of the proposed swimming pool in Sligo. Expenditure on this project in 1992 will be met from Vote 26 Office of the Minister for Education, Subhead B.11 Grants for the Provision of Major Sports Facilities. Expenditure on the project in 1993 will be met from the 1993 provision for such facilities.

Sligo Corporation are proceeding with the necessary arrangements for the placing of the contract and the commencement of work on the project.
