Vol. 422 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fruit and Vegetables Grading.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

19 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline his proposals, if any, to improve the grading presentation and marketing in Irish fruit and vegetables, including potatoes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Grading and quality standards for fruit and vegetables are governed by EC regulations and for potatoes by national regulations. These standards are enforced by my Department at all stages of the marketing chain to ensure compliance. Presentational aspects are included in the quality standards.

An Bord Glas is actively engaged in the promotion of improved quality of all horticultural produce. It has introduced a quality mark for tomatoes and it is intended to extend this to other products including potatoes.
