Vol. 422 No. 5

Written Answers. - Meat Inspection Services.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

33 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if, in view of the findings of the recent report of the Comptroller and Auditor General that his Department are not providing meat inspection services at meat plants in a cost efficient way, he intends to introduce any reforms in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The organisation of, and method of charging for, inspection services at meat plants have been examined by my Department. I have made regulations to give effect to the terms of the European Communities (Fees for Health Inspections and Controls of Fresh Meat) Regulations 1992 which have been introduced from 6 July 1992.
