Vol. 422 No. 5

Written Answers. - Angel Dust.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

34 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his Department have sought or intend to seek any further details from a prominent IFA official (details supplied) in County Waterford regarding statements he is reported to have made (details supplied) that a number of farmers throughout the country were feeding angel dust to cattle; if he will outline the response to any such request if one has been received; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would expect that members of farm organisations would make available to officers of my Department or the Garda Síochána all information at their disposal in relation to criminal offences. I am making further enquiries in this case.

It is generally accepted that this country has a very comprehensive range of measures to deal with the abuse of illegal growth enhancers. This campaign which focuses on testing for residues at factory and farm level and on the prevention of the distribution of those substances will be maintained.
