Written Answers. - Agricultural Legislation.

Jim Higgins

Question:

44 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give details of the legislation, for which he is responsible, enacted by the Oireachtas which has not yet gone into effect; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In so far as my Department are concerned, legislation enacted by the Oireachtas which has not yet come into effect is as follows:

(1) Part III of the Abattoirs Act, 1988 relating to knackeries. The future of knackeries is the subject of discussion and legislation at EC level. The full provisions of Part III of the Act cannot be introduced until eventual EC requirements are known.

(2) Sections 16, 18, 21, 31, 34, 42, 43, 44, 45, 55 and 57 of the Diseases of Animal Act, 1986 (No. 6 of 1966).

The Department are currently preparing for commencement of these sections.
