Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Alan Shatter

Question:

170 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the number of applications for asylum currently awaiting decision by him; the number of people to which such applications relate; the number of such applicants currently held in custody and the place of custody.

There are forty-three applications for refugee status under consideration. They are being processed in accordance with the agreed procedures with the assistance of the applicants themselves and with the assistance of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Department of Foreign Affairs. The applications relate to forty six persons. One applicant, who was refused leave to land on 22 September in accordance with the law on aliens controls, is detained in Limerick Prison on foot of that refusal.
