Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Enniscorthy (Wexford) Garda Station.

Ivan Yates

Question:

177 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Justice if he will clarify the current situation in relation to the construction of a new Garda barracks in Enniscorthy, County Wexford; when the site will be acquired by the Office of Public Works in this regard; if the ministerial commitment to start construction by 1st December, 1992 will be honoured; the reason there has been a three month delay in completing the legal transfer of the site in view of the fact that a price has been agreed by both parties; and if he will expedite matters and set out a time frame for the construction of this new facility.

It is proposed to provide a new District headquarters at Enniscorthy on a site a few hundred yards from the existing station. Negotiations for the site's purchase from the local Urban District Council are at an advanced stage. I am informed by the Office of Public Works that they are obtaining legal advice on title at present. In view of this, it is not possible to say when work will begin but some preliminary planning has been done and I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay once the site issue is resolved.
