Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Book Grant.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

206 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education the amount of necessitous child grant paid in total through Kill National School, County Kildare, in the 1979/80 school year; the total number of families who received such grants in that school year; the name of each family so assisted; the amount of assistance in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total amount paid to Scoil Naomh Bhrighde, Kill, County Kildare, in respect of the school book grant for needy pupils for the 1979-80 school year was £210. The grant was paid on the basis of the number of pupils in the school the principal considered were in need of assistance which for the year in question was 70 pupils.

The scheme was administered in the normal manner, through the principal teacher who, subject to the amount of money made available to the school had discretion in the extent of assistance to be given to each pupil and the manner of distributing the funds. Information as to the means of families assisted would normally be held by the school and is regarded as strictly confidential.
