Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Cork School.

Peter Barry

Question:

221 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the reason a teacher has been withdrawn from Monkstown national school, County Cork; and if he has satisfied himself with the pupil/teacher ratio in that school at present.

The authorised staffing for Monkstown National School for the 1992/93 school year warranted by the enrolment of 218 pupils on the 30th September 1991 is a principal plus six assistants. An enrolment of 229 pupils would have been required to retain the post of 7th assistant. The post of seventh assistant was accordingly discontinued from the 31st August 1992.

The school, which also has a remedial teacher, is, in the current year, not in breach of the maximum class size guidelines laid down by my Department. The retention of the post of seventh assistant teacher for the 1992/93 school year may, not, therefore be sanctioned.
