Vol. 423 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to the Ceann Comhairle under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: Deputy Yates — the plight of part-time firemen who have been severely affected by the provisions of the Social Welfare Act, 1992, whereby they are to be very strictly curtailed in their unemployment assistance payments; Deputy O'Keeffe — the recent killing of a corporal and the injuring of a private (details supplied) in Lebanon; the circumstances and the steps being taken to reduce the risks to our peacekeeping soldiers in Lebanon; Deputy Sherlock — the health and environmental problems caused for the residents of Dominick Collins Place, Youghal, County Cork, arising from coal dust emissions from the depot of a company (details supplied), as a result of the infiltration of coal dust and other debris into the homes during unloading and bagging of coal, and the need to ensure compliance with the Air Pollution Act; Deputy Fennell — the suspended sentencing of a man guilty of raping an 18 month old baby girl and whether the Minister for Justice will make a statement on the matter; Deputy Enright — the increase in the number of orders for repossession being sought by building societies, banks and local authorities for family homes and the action, if any, the Minister for the Environment is prepared to take to remedy this serious situation, which is being particularly aggravated in the light of recent mortgage increases; Deputy Gilmore — the sale by the Office of Public Works of a portion of Chantilly Stud Farm, Shankill, County Dublin; Deputy Burke — whether the Minister for Education will take immediate steps to prevent further breakouts and disturbances at Oberstown House, Lusk, and in particular if he will arrange for the immediate erection of the security fence which was to be part of the reopening of Oberstown; Deputy Flanagan — the action the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications proposes to take on the former European College of Aeronautics based in Cork now in liquidation and closed; and the steps he proposes to take to alleviate the hardship and severe loss thrust upon the students who are unable to complete their course; Deputy Quill — the adjournment of scheduled court hearings in the County Cork towns of Ballincollig and Carrigaline due for this week owing to the unavailability of a judge and the consequent adverse impact on the maintenance of law and order in the county and to request the Minister for Justice to make a temporary appointment to enable hearings to proceed; Deputy Spring — the matter of the refusal of the Department of Justice to issue entry visas to the spouses and families of eight doctors (details supplied) working or studying in Ireland; Deputy T. Ahearn — the continuous delay with the commencement of the community school in Cashel, County Tipperary, where the local community can no longer tolerate the broken promises of the last three years and where education facilities have deteriorated to a serious state; whether moneys are allocated for this project; and if it will start in 1992, as promised; Deputy Moynihan — the serious position of both widows and old age pensioners in receipt of non-contributory pensions which are supplemented by British retirement pensions, arising from the devaluation of sterling, causing a very substantial reduction in the weekly income of those pensioners; Deputy McCartan — the case of a person adopted by an Irish citizen, who is a refugee from Vietnam, and who has been refused Irish citizenship by the Minister for Justice (details supplied); Deputy Deenihan — if the Minister for Agriculture and Food will extend the concession granted to farmers in severely handicapped areas to allow them to sell their cattle and qualify for premia payments to farmers in disadvantaged areas; Deputy Ferris — the subject matter of Parliamentary Questions Nos. 117 to 119 of 5 May 1992 regarding the ambulance service in County Tipperary, and Deputy Rabbitte — whether the Minister for Health has made a recommendation to the Government concerning the construction of the regional hospital at Tallaght, and whether the Government have agreed to make the necessary provision in the Estimates.

The Ceann Comhairle has selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Spring, McCartan and T. Ahearn.
