Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Question:

277 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he has any immediate plans to reimburse General Practitioners in the general medical scheme for run-off cover.

It is a matter for each participating general practitioner to make medical indemnity insurance arrangements which are appropriate to his/her circumstances. Under the terms of the first Review of the current General Medical Services Contract participating doctors are entitled to have a portion of their medical indemnity premia reimbursed, based on panel size.

Question:

278 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on reports that he is seeking to implement some of the radical organisational changes within the general medical services for general practice before negotiations on additional funding for the speciality are completed in his review.

The Deputy will be aware that the Review of the General Medical Services commenced its deliberations in March of this year. At the outset of the Review the parties undertook to regard nothing as being agreed until a final agreed package was arrived at. In this context the management representatives in the Review have identified a number of fundamental organisational changes which they feel will enhance the delivery of general practitioner care at local level and proposals to give effect to these changes at the earliest possible time have been put to the medical representatives for their consideration.
