Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Maintenance of Sea Walls.

Peter Barry

Question:

350 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the fact that Cork represents half of the 270 kilometres of Irish coastline protected by sea walls, he will make a special grant available for their upkeep as many of them are over a century old and protect roads along the coastline of drowned valleys.

My Department has no responsibility for the construction and maintenance of sea walls in general. In so far as sea walls are necessary for the protection of public roads in their functional area, it is open to Cork County Council to use the annual discretionary road grant for the maintenance of such walls. The discretionary grant for Cork County Council in 1992 amounts to £8.026 million. There are no funds available to me for special grants for such purposes.
