Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leixlip (Kildare) Sewage Treatment Plant.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

366 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment whether he, directly or through the aegis of Kildare County Council, has undertaken an evaluation of the sewage treatment plant at Leixlip, County Kildare with a view to identifying the source and effecting remedial action in relation to the offensive odour which is permanently emanating from the plant; if he or his technical advisers are satisfied that the plant has worked or is working in accordance with the manufacturer's specification; if he is satisfied as to the cost efficiency of the plant; if he anticipates augmentation to alleviate the nuisance; if he will state the costs of such works and the likely date for implementation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The operation and maintenance of the Leixlip sewage treatment plant is a matter for Kildare County Council. There are no proposals with my Department for odour control measures at the plant. Kildare County Council were requested, as stated in reply to Question No. 483 of 16 November 1992, to submit a report on the matter and to outline the remedial measures which are considered necessary, but to date they have not responded.
