Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Zoo.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

386 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of import licences for animals for Dublin Zoo granted over the last five years; the animals/birds etc. that were involved; the length of time involved; whether any applications have been turned down; and if so, the reasons for this decision.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 386 and 387 together.

It is not the practice to issue details on import licences issued or refused on an individual basis. Dublin Zoo is one of many importers of a wide range of exotic animals and birds over the last five years. Most of the licences issued to importers covered permanent importation. Some applications have been refused on animal health grounds.

Quarantine operates for periods up to six months following importation and my Department must be satisfied that suitable facilities are available before issue of a licence. No difficulties have been encountered with these arrangements.
