Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Culliton Committee Recommendations.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

443 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Labour if, in respect of the recommendations of the Cullition Committee he will outline, for each recommendation concerning his Department, the action, if any, which he has already taken or proposes to take, the changes involved and the cost of such action; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The main recommendation made in the Culliton report related to training and drew attention to the fact that more attention and resources had to be given to training for those already in employment. I accept the fact that action has to be taken to ensure increased training for people already in employment.

I am currently having discussions with the social partners and other relevant interests about the future direction of manpower policy in the light of the Culliton Committee recommendations, the Green Paper on education and the proposals by the task force on the implementation of the Culliton report. The policy changes envisaged will be set out in the White Paper on Manpower Policy which will be published following the current round of discussions with the interests concerned. It is my intention to publish the White Paper before the end of the year.
