Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Explortation Licences.

Peter Barry

Question:

148 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Energy the number of offshore exploration licences which have (a) been issued (b) the number which are being worked in 1992 and (c) will be worked in 1993.

I understand that the Deputy intends his question to relate solely to petroleum exploration licences.

Details of all petroleum exploration licences and other authorisations are set out in half-yearly reports which are laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas in accordance with Section 57 of the Petroleum and Other Minerals Development Act, 1960. The most recent report, covering the six months ended 30 June 1992, was laid before the Houses on 7 September 1992 (PL No. 8981). At present four petroleum exploration licences are current covering acreage in both the Porcupine and North Celtic Sea Basins in our offshore designated area.

In relation to work under petroleum exploration licences, the position is that all licences carry a work obligation for a particular phase of the licence covering a number of years. I am therefore not in a position to outline precisely the work to be undertaken in any one year.
