Vol. 423 No. 2

Written Answers. - FÁS Apprentices.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

44 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Labour the number of apprentices employed/sponsored by (a) FÁS and (b) nationally for each year from 1990 to date; and if he has any plans to increase the numbers.

The total number of first year apprentices registered with FÁS for 1990 and 1991 was 2,855 and 2,919 respectively.

I would remind the Deputy that primary responsibility for the recruitment of apprentices rests with employers. It has, however, been the practice under the existing apprenticeship system for FÁS to sponsor a number of apprentices to meet any shortfall due to unexpected increased demand for skilled persons from existing or new employers. The actual number involved is a day-to-day matter for FÁS.
The new apprenticeship system agreed in theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress visualises all apprentices being sponsored by employers with special provision being made for disadvantaged persons such as the handicapped and early school leavers. The intention is that an additional 1,000 apprentices should be recruited each year under the new system in the currently designated trades. In addition, FÁS is currently exploring how the new apprenticeship system might be extended to occupations outside the currently designated apprenticeships. This would have the effect of considerably increasing apprenticeship opportunities for young people.
